1971-72 Fleer Harlem Globetrotters Checklist, Basketball Cards Details

The Harlem Globetrotters are one of basketball’s greatest icons. Even Michael Jordan never got a chance to pair up with Scooby-Doo. And while there are some Harlem Globetrotters trading cards, there aren’t a lot. The 1992 Comic Images set might be the most comprehensive from a historical perspective, but there’s no question that 1971-72 Fleer Harlem Globetrotters is the most fun and popular.

1971 Fleer Harlem Globetrotters Box

The set comes with 84 cards. They’re all posed studio shots of then-current players. The photos highlight the fun and whimsy that are team trademarks. Plenty of stills showcase trick shots and props. Several of the 1971-72 Fleer Harlem Globetrotters basketball cards include multiple players.

Like traditional basketball cards, backs include players vitals and background bios. The end result is a set that illustrates not only the team, but the individuals that made them icons.

Besides the base set, there’s also a team emblem sticker that was inserted in every pack. Given it’s plentiful supply compared to individual cards, it’s not worth much.

1971-72 Fleer Harlem Globetrotters is somewhat of an overlooked set today, which is a shame because it’s so much fun. It straddles the fence between being basketball cards, at least from a professional standpoint, or entertainment cards.

There is something of a divide over whether it’s a 1971 or 1972 set as the backs do not list one in the copyright.

1971 Fleer Harlem Globetrotters Wrapper

Fleer released a similar but smaller set as a premium for Cocoa Puffs cereal. The images for the set are the same, but the cereal is advertised on the backs of them, so it’s not hard to tell between the two releases.
