2007 Inkworks Hellboy: Sword of Storms trading cards take a bit of a different approach than the set for the first theatrical film. Based on the direct-to-video animated movie, sketch cards highlight the chase for this product.
The 72-card base set starts with a look at the main characters. There aren’t many. From there, the story is retold through trading cards. The animated approach makes it easy for image selection. And while the theatrical releases weren’t runaway blockbusters, far more people watched those than this take. For some, this might be their introduction to Sword of Storms.
Sketch cards replaced autographs and Pieceworks costume cards as the primary inserts. A total of 19 artists contributed to these. Among them: Hellboy creator Mike Mignola who did 101 total sketch cards. Other artists did approximately 250. Each artist’s pack-inserted cards are numbered on the back. What’s also notable about the Hellboy sketch cards is that other than Mignola, color drawings are the norm. That’s common today, but at the time, quick sketches were still prevalent.
Two additional insert sets are in packs. Demons Unleashed is a nine-card foil puzzle. Hero’s Journey features six die-cut foil cards.
