2007 Inkworks Seeker: The Dark Is Rising trading cards a perfect example of the place the card maker found itself in. Following the success of Harry Potter, it seemed like every piece of genre written for the younger set was turned into a would-be blockbuster. Again and again, Inkworks rolled the dice on these adaptations. Again and again, they would fail.
Not because of the quality of the sets but the fact that there would never be another Harry Potter. Twilight finally tapped into some of that fandom, but by then it was too late. Inkworks was in trouble and headed for bankruptcy.
As a trading card adaptation, 2007 Inkworks Seeker: The Dark Is Rising does a great job converting its subject matter. The checklist shows depth, including autographs from many of the leads and notable names in the cast. However, it’s tough for a set to sell if the movie’s a flop. And that’s exactly what happened here.
The 72-card base set starts out by looking at the film’s characters and the mythos that laid the groundwork for the story. Plot recaps come in the second half of the set.
2007 Inkworks Seeker: The Dark Is Rising Autographs and Inserts
Autographs fall one per box. While Inkworks wasn’t able to get Christopher Eccleston to sign (nobody has), just about every other recognizable name and key actor did. That said, it’s not a cast that has a lot of recognizable names. The top card today belongs to Ian McShane, best known for playing Al Swearengen in the HBO Western, Deadwood.
Pieceworks costume cards are also inserted one per box. Just six cards are in the set but all highlight different characters. Eccleston is included here.
2007 Inkworks Seeker: The Dark Is Rising has three additional basic insert sets available in packs. Signs of Light is the standard Inkworks foil puzzle. There’s also the six-card Eternal Enemies and three Hidden Cards.
