After making sets for Jurassic Park and The Lost World, Topps didn’t land the license for the franchise’s third film. As a result, collectors got something very different than the basic, traditional offerings of the first two movies. 2001 Inkworks Jurassic Park III takes the movie and gives it a 3-D spin. We’re not talking the fancy lenticular 3-D either. Rather it’s the red and blue 3-D that’s never been very three dimensional to begin with. Couple the strange look with a bland insert lineup and you’ve got a set that lacks pop no matter what’s advertised.
The base set has 72 cards that mix story and dinosaur facts. The designs are bold and loud, perhaps better suited for the early 1990s. Of course, there are lots of concessions being made to build up the 3-D gimmick.
Inserts delve further into the wild. Jurassic X-treme is a nine-card set (1:11) that showcases different dinosaurs with close-up shots and die-cut edges.
Ragin’ Refractors have illustrations of dinos trying to rip each other apart. The more common versions have a blue background. There are also green parallels.
Mega Mayhem rounds out the pack inserts. It’s just one card but it’s fairly tough to pull at every third box.
The 3-D look requires a pair of glasses to work. They were included as a box topper. They were also inserted in packs at a rate of two per box.
By the time 2001 Inkworks Jurassic Park III was released, both autographs and costume cards were becoming common inclusions in a lot of sets. However, this isn’t one of them.
