Just like the show, 2001 Inkworks Simpsons Mania! trading cards are very aware of what they are and the medium they come from. While the set uses original art, there’s definitely a sense of familiarity for card collectors.
The 72-card base set covers a lot of ground with a handful of subsets. Character cards may bring a sense of deja vu for some. That’s because the design is the same one that SkyBox used for their two sets of Simpsons trading cards back in the early 1990s. Treehouse of Horror cards show of some of the great characters from the early Halloween specials, complete with black light images on the back. Bart Gallery cards give a high-art spin on the show. Finally, there are Packy Wack cards that spoof Topps’ Wacky Packages with a Springfield twist.
2001 Inkworks Simpsons Mania! includes some autographs from key voice actors. Inserted about every other box, signers include Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Nancy Cartwright (Bart) and Yeardley Smith (Lisa).
Sketch cards are also included. These remain extremely popular, although not to the same level as the original Art De Bart card from SkyBox, which had art from Matt Groening. A total of nine artists worked on the set, although all are done in the classic Simpsons style. Some can be found in color, but the majority are not.
Other inserts include SimpsaDelic Black Light cards, which pay tribute to art from the late 1960s and early 1970s, and six Dr. Marvin Monroe’s Split Personality Fold ‘Ems.
2001 Inkworks Simpsons Mania also has a self referential box loader with Krusty and Comic Book Guy case topper.
