1994 Cardz Muppets Take the Ice trading cards are an unlikely collaboration between the NHL and Kermit and company. It uses the Muppets to highlight key hockey terms, rules and the league’s teams. Needless to say, it’s neither your typical set of hockey cards or entertainment trading cards.
The 1994 Cardz Muppets Take the Ice base set has 80 cards. Within that are several subsets including Positions, Equipment, and Rules and Definitions. Team Facts and History each highlight the NHL’s franchises. The History cards might be the most fun as they use Muppets to reinterpret the league’s logos.
It is worth noting that the set doesn’t use a deep roster of Muppets for the cards. Rather it’s limited to Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo and Animal. It’s not surprising as the Muppets weren’t very high profile at the time. And this set was aimed at a younger generation than those that grew up with The Muppet Show.
The set’s only inserts are Tekchrome cards similar to those used in 1993’s Jim Henson’s Muppets set. The images on these cards are the same as ones used in the base set only with a foil finish.
