1999 Topps WCW/nWo Nitro came when the Monday Night Wars were peaking. Like the previous year’s similar WCW/nWo release, Nitro is a fairly straightforward release. It also has one of the greatest autograph checklists ever compiled for a set of wrestling cards.
The 72-card checklist is primarily focused on WCW’s stars at the time. There are plenty of big names including Hulk Hogan, Goldberg, Sting, Bret Hart and Chris Jericho. Wrestlers are divided up by groups and factions, whether it’s the nWo, those who stayed storyline loyal to WCW, the LWO and the ladies of WCW.
Autographs are not guaranteed in 1999 Topps WCW/nWo hobby boxes. They land 1:48 packs so three out of four should have one. Autographs are only in hobby boxes, not retail. You can tell the two apart a couple of ways. First, hobby boxes have 36 packs versus retail’s 24. They also highlight the potential for autographs. Retail boxes mention stickers, which aren’t in hobby.
As far as autograph signers go, it’s filled with many top wrestler’s from the 1980s and 1990s. It’s also a reminder of the tragedy of so many wrestlers passing away far too young. Highlights include Bret Hart, Sting, Goldberg, Curt Hennig, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Bam Bam Bigelow, and Ms. Elizabeth.
The only other inserts in hobby packs are 12 Chrome cards highlighting pay-per-view main events. The same 12 cards are done as Stickers for retail packs.
A Chromium bonus card with Kevin Nash and three of the Nitro Girls was given as a case incentive to dealers.
