1996 SkyBox Hunchback of Notre Dame trading cards take a journey through the animated Disney film. Mirroring the movie’s box office results, the reception for the set was a mixed bag. The cards themselves are solid. But they were also heavily produced, a factor that is likely magnified due to the fact that the movie marked a downturn for the animation juggernaut. Not love, not hated—indifference.
1996 SkyBox Hunchback of Notre Dame Checklist Details
The 1996 SkyBox Hunchback of Notre Dame checklist consists pretty much entirely of the main set. That said, towards the end of the 101-card set there are some subsets that look and feel more like chase cards.
Things start with a 27-card summary of the film. It’s a quick retelling using key scenes and imagery. From there, things break down into small subsets that look at characters, themes and the story’s backdrop.
Starting at card #61, these subsets are where the insert-style cards kick in. They’re not necessarily premium, even by mid ’90s standards, but they’re not standard cards, either. Topsy Turvy cards can be separated and used to build a variety of characters. Pop-Ups, Coin Cards and Finger Puppets lend a sense of play. Build-A-Tower lets collectors build a mini model of the Notre Dame Cathedral.
Four Puzzle cards round out the set. However, these are exclusive to hobby packs.
While the full set has 101 cards, there are a couple of variations. The two checklist cards each have two different versions. One set reflects the cards available in hobby packs while the other uses the retail lineup.
Two lenticular 3-D Motion cards are the biggest chase in 1996 SkyBox Hunchback of Notre Dame packs. These land 1:24 packs. Other inserts include six Iron-On cards (1:6 hobby packs) and 10 Coloring Cards (two per retail pack).
