Hercules: The Legendary Journeys wasn’t the deepest show, but it had a sense of fun. The same can be said about its first go in the hobby. 1996 Topps Hercules: The Legendary Journeys trading cards feature a simple configuration but it’s not completely boring.
The base set has 90 cards. The checklist devotes itself heavily to character bios and season one episodes. Additional subsets center on things like battles and even on Xena, who would go on to get her own show as well as several sets of trading cards.
The first 18 cards are short prints, making building a set a little bit tougher. However, they’re not incredibly rare.
1996 Topps Hercules: The Legendary Journeys isn’t big on inserts. Just two make up the chase. Embossed cards are inserted 1:8 packs. One of two holograms can be found in every 18 packs.
Given the basic nature of the product as a whole, it doesn’t command a lot of secondary market attention. Even now, building a master set is relatively easy and affordable.
Although this is the only set for the show from Topps, Rittenhouse Archives would go on to make more Hercules trading cards. They also grabbed the Xena license, which would prove to be even more popular.
