Fact and legend collide in 1956 Topps Roundup (or Western Round-Up), a biographical series that highlights some of the biggest personalities of the Old West. Even with a somewhat crowded assortment of Western-themed sets released during the era, this is one of biggest that remains popular today.
1956 Topps Roundup Checklist Details
Consisting of 80 total cards, the 1956 Topps Roundup checklist breaks down nicely into eight different sections:
- Wild Bill Hickok – #1-10
- Calamity Jane – #11-20
- Buffalo Bill – #21-30
- Wyatt Earp – #31-40
- Daniel Boone – #41-50
- Jesse James – #51-60
- Geronimo – #61-70
- Kit Carson – #71-80
Each section leads off with a profile card that names the featured personality. The remaining nine offer key moments from their life that are etched in legend — sometimes with a hint of myth. The idea is that these section offer a profile overview. Backs help this even more by having both a short write-up and a corresponding comic.
1956 Topps Roundup came in both 1-cent and 5-cent packs.
With its big historical names, structure and strong artwork, there’s a lot to appreciate here. It also helps to explain why the set is not only one of the most popular sets dedicated to the Old West but all 1950s trading cards.
It’s not a terribly rare set but finding them in top condition is. Significantly less than five percent of the 1956 Topps Roundup cards submitted to PSA have received a grade of Mint (9) or better.
