1991 Topps Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves trading cards are both basic and confusing. At its most straightforward level, it’s a traditional Topps entertainment release consisting exclusively of cards and stickers. So where’s the confusion? There are two similar but different sets packaged under the same name.
1991 Topps Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves Checklist Details
No matter the version, 1991 Topps Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves recaps the blockbuster film. That means lots of Kevin Costner and a supporting cast that includes Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. You’ll even find a little bit of Alan Rickman.
Depending on which version of the set you have, the base set has either 55 cards or 88 cards. The general design for both are the same. Most of the cards basically are, too. Obviously, the 88-card set covers more ground with a significantly larger checklist.
It’s not so simple as 33 cards being removed. Each version of the set is labelled differently, making two distinct sets. The difference comes on the back where there’s a call out at the bottom to collect either 55 or 88 cards. So even when everything lines up, matching cards are variations and there are two different sets.
The theory is that the 88-card set came out first. But, for whatever reason, things were cut and adjustments were made.
At any rate, neither set is particularly rare and there doesn’t appear to be a big premium placed on one over the other.
For those going the pack or box route, there doesn’t appear to be any way to tell the two apart.
Both versions have nine Stickers, which are one per pack. These are different as well. For starters, while there is some overlap in images, they’re not exactly the same. Numbering changes as well. More distinct is the puzzle on the back. Stickers packaged with the 55-card set have the film’s illustrated logo. The 88-card set has a Kevin Costner puzzle on the back.
