1991 Pro Set Yo MTV Raps charts the golden era of hip hop. Under appreciated for decades, looking back on it today is equal parts fun, nostalgia and music appreciation — even for Vanilla Ice.
Consisting of 150 cards, the 1991 Pro Set Yo MTV Raps checklist centers on the artists who were at the forefront of hip hop as it was coming into the mainstream. Pop stars like M.C. Hammer, Vanilla Ice and L.L. Cool J are joined by groundbreakers such as Fab 5 Freddy, Run-D.M.C. and Slick Rick. The Beastie Boys, Digital Underground, Public Enemy, De La Soul, Queen Latifah and A Tribe Called Quest are some of the other rap icons appearing in the set.
The style and structure of the set is similar to 1991 Pro Set Super Stars MusiCards. While that set touches on hip hop, it’s more pop and rock in its scope.
1991 Pro Set Yo MTV Raps has two separate parts. The main series consists of the first 100 cards. An Update Series added the remaining 50 cards. Update Series packs do contain all 150 cards, though.
Like virtually every Pro Set release, there’s a hologram chase card. This one isn’t numbered and odds are not known. It’s not as iconic as football’s Lombardi Trophy Hologram or the Stanley Cup in hockey but it’s still a tough card to find.
The most value can be found in 1991 Pro Set Yo MTV Raps through its singles. Casual collectors might not want a set, but they may want the cards of their favorite artists. We’re talking early ’90s Pro Set so rarity is not an issue. Although prices have risen in recent years, it’s still not a wildly expensive product and it is fairly easy to find.
