2000 Topps Chrome Pokemon Checklist and Trading Cards Details

2000 Topps Chrome Pokemon isn’t part of the trading card game series. Rather, it spins out of the animated television show, a theme that runs through several sets of Topps Pokemon trading cards. Taking more of a premium approach, the 2000 Topps Chrome Pokemon checklist gets its identity for the stock they’re printed on. Done with a metal-like surface, it’s a more upscale look and feel. For some, it might also be a connection of sorts to the foil chase cards found in the game.

Done in two series, 2000 Topps Chrome Pokemon values and popularity have soared. Unopened packs cost hundreds and sealed boxes sell for thousands. Individual cards have followed suit, both raw and graded.

Between Series 1 and Series 2, the entire 2000 Topps Chrome Pokemon checklist has 151 cards. Each of the Generation I Pokemon get a card. Cards #1-78 are in Series 1 packs with Series 2 covering #79-151. Pikachu, Charizard, Squirtle and friends are all here.

Fronts have a large image of the character with their name and Pokedex numbers (which match the card numbers) on the bottom. Background have abstract art and etchings that go with the type of Pokemon they are. It also works well with the shiny chromium stock.

Backs give a description of the Pokemon as well as a mention of their first appearance in the animated series.

2000 Topps Chrome Pokemon Parallels

Every 2000 Topps Chrome Pokemon card has three different parallel versions. These are the same basic cards only with different backdrops and increased rarity.

Spectra-Chrome (1:2 packs) are similar to Refractors in other Topps Chrome sets. These have a lighter background that have a rainbow pop when they’re put under bright light. Sparkle-Chrome (1:10 packs) are very easy to tell thanks to their dotted background. Finally, there are Tekno-Chrome (1:15 packs) versions. These have a patterned of small squares. In some sports sets, this pattern is referred to as Atomic Refractors. Like Spectra-Chrome cards, the best results are seen when there’s lots of light.

If you’re still not sure of which version a card is, parallels are labelled on the back. Look to the frame directly above the card number. If it’s a Spectra, Sparkle or Tekno, it’ll say so.

Parallel odds are the same in both Series 1 and Series 2.

Topps Chrome Pokemon Rarity

Print runs specifics for 2000 Topps Chrome Pokemon are not known. However, looking at what’s on the secondary market today, demand is definitely outpacing supplies. It also appears that Series 2 may be rarer than Series 1. It’s certainly tougher to find unopened packs and boxes.

The old-school connection appeals to a nostalgic collecting base. This is also a much higher quality set than Topps’ handful of other sets based on the animated series and movies.

There’s some added crossover draw for sports cards collectors. Topps Chrome is one of the biggest modern brands out there with a history dating back to 1996 in baseball.

Much like the trading card game, the character-driven checklist allows for it to be collected in a variety of ways. Besides the basic set build, many collectors like to chase their favorite characters. The parallels add an even further layer.

As far as values go, it varies greatly. Professionally graded copies with high grades are worth a lot more than those that aren’t. The character can also impact the price. You might not be able to unleash a powerful attack like the card game, but Charizard is still going to command significantly more than a Weedle.

Looking more generally, raw single cards can range from a couple of dollars to a couple hundred. High-grade PSA, BGS, CGS and SGC can take that up to $50 or more for common Pokemon and thousands for the most popular.

The biggest values for single cards in 2000 Topps Chrome Pokemon are with the parallels, which shouldn’t be surprising given how tough they are to find today even though the odds aren’t very long.

Single packs of 2000 Topps Chrome Pokemon can sell for around $300 and up today. Sealed boxes have sold for over $10,000.
