1992 Topps Trash Can Trolls Checklist, Trading Cards Info

1992 Topps Trash Can Trolls takes a formula very familiar to the company and simply applies it to another toy phenomenon. While the concept isn’t exactly groundbreaking and it failed to catch on, looking back today, there is some nostalgia to be drawn from the cards even if you didn’t collect them when they first came out.

1992 Topps Trash Can Trolls Checklist Details

Trash Can Trolls take the fluffy-haired troll doll craze of the early 1990s and turns them on their head — and chops off their arms, has them puke, blows them up and has them create all sorts of mischief. They’re gross-out humor sticker cards aimed at being the edgy contraband of schoolyard playgrounds everywhere.

Sound familiar?

They should. It’s pretty much the Garbage Pail Kids formula applied to another trendy doll. This is actually the second time Topps ripped off their own creation if you take their lesser known 1985 Gross Bears buttons.

The card maker even acknowledges the GPK connection with the first card in the set. Not only does Joel Troll/Fall-Out Paul take the same gag as Adam Bomb but it literally shows the unofficial Garbage Pail Kids mascot getting an unceremonious boot. Subtle it’s not in Topps’ attempt at passing the torch.

The 1992 Topps Trash Can Trolls checklist consists of 88 cards. But wait, there’s more GPK connections here as the set follows the same pattern of A-B name variations. That means there are 44 different pieces of art, each with two different names and slightly different numbers.

Shifting from Cabbage Patch Kids to trolls, the art style is somewhat different with added layers of detail. However, GPK fans will recognize many of the gags. Not all, but many are new twists on Original Series Garbage Pail Kids.

One of the more interesting aspects of 1992 Topps Trash Can Trolls is the packaging. In case the troll spoof wasn’t obvious enough, many of the boxes include fluffy hair to add some visual flair on the shelf or counter.

Taking Out the Trash

While the original run of Garbage Pail Kids lasted 15 sets, Trash Can Trolls went just one. The familiar but different theme never caught on and Topps quickly moved on.

Values today aren’t rock bottom but they’re not spectacular. Whether it’s boxes, sets or singles, there’s still quite a bit of product out there.
