Get to its essence and 2013 Topps 75th Anniversary is a set of trading cards about trading cards. And while it certainly gives the iconic manufacturer a chance to pat itself on the back with decades of history highlighted on the checklist, it’s also a place where collectors can get some modern cards featuring many classic films, TV shows and other entertainment licenses that got the trading card treatment over the years.
2013 Topps 75th Anniversary Checklist Overview
The base set has 100 cards, each highlighting a different set of entertainment trading cards the company put out starting with 1948 Magic Photos and running through 1995 X-Files. Fronts are basically a reprint of one of the cards with the Topps 75th logo added. Backs delve into both the property and the cards that spun out of them.
The approach is unique in that the set chronicles popular culture, trading cards and how the two intersect. It’s also a way that Topps found a way around licensing deals because the set uses Topps cards as the subject and not Batman, Charlie’s Angels or ALF.
Parallels for all 100 cards are available in four levels. Rainbow Foil are the most common, landing one per pack. There’s also the Diamond Anniversary (/75), which have a speckled background, Modern Gloss (/10) and Printing Plates (1/1).
Autographs and Other Inserts
Autographs combine to fall three per hobby box. Like the base set, there’s plenty of variety represented within the list of 22 signers. Bigger names include Roger Moore (James Bond), Van Williams (The Green Hornet) and Corey Feldman (The Goonies). But then there are also some other quirky inclusions like Ed Gale who played Howard the Duck in the 1986 film, and Maggie Langrick and Joshua Rudoy from Harry and the Hendersons.
Williams, Feldman and Russell Johnson were redemptions in the product, which have long since expired. Johnson passed away shortly after the set’s release, but he had already signed stickers and Topps was still able to fulfill at least some of the redemptions.
Like the main set, autographs are centered around Topps cards. A picture of a card the signer appeared on is pictured on the front surrounded by lots of white space. Signatures are done on stickers and applied in the space below the card image.
Autograph parallels include Rainbow Foil, which have a stated print run of 150 copies each, and Diamond Anniversary, which are numbered to 75.
Sylvester Stallone has some extremely scarce autographs in 2013 Topps 75th Anniversary. His signatures are on original Rocky II, Rocky IV and Rambo: First Blood Part II cards, each stamped as a 1/1.
The checklist also has seven one-of-one Cut Signatures. All are actors and personalities that appeared in classic Topps sets.
The set has two additional insert sets. Eight Test Cards highlight sets that went into production but never got wide releases. Eight Mini Cards focus on sets that were smaller than the traditional 2.5″ by 3.5″ trading card dimensions we know today.
Stamped Buybacks
Every 2013 Topps 75th Anniversary box also has one stamped buyback. These are original Topps cards from over the years that have the set’s logo on them with a foil stamp.
It’s impossible to know how many copies of individual cards exist or whether every cards from every represented set got the buyback treatment as a list was never released. However, given the scope of sets, it’s probably safe to assume that specific cards probably don’t have more than a handful of copies.
