1993 SkyBox Simpsons trading cards might be the most important set the show ever produced. And while the main is a strong one and the basic inserts are fun, it’s one particular rarity that elevates this one to all-timer status.
1993 SkyBox Simpsons Checklist Overview
The base set takes a three-in-one approach. Consisting of three different sections, each with their own numbering and style, it totals 80 cards.
First up are 40 characters. These lean into one of the strengths of the show — it’s massive list of strange, colorful and oddly relatable Springfield residents. Unlike the 1990 Topps set that’s exclusively the Simpsons family, here it goes far beyond it. Krusty the Clown, Sideshow Bob, Barney Gumble and even theCapitol City Goofball.
Next up are 30 Itchy and Scratchy cards. These are essentially like posters or title screens for cartoon shorts.
Rounding out the 1993 SkyBox Simpsons base set are ten Radioactive Man cards. These are a mix of character cards and faux comic covers.
Although each theme has a different design, there is a connection on the back with a Flip-O-Matic section. When put together, these make a small big of Itchy and Scratchy stop-motion animation.
A Simpsons Trading Card Masterpiece
The crown jewel of 1993 SkyBox Simpsons is the elusive Art DeBart. One of the hobby’s first sketch cards, each has an original drawing from Simpsons creator Matt Groening. Not only that, but there’s an autograph as well.
Numbered to 400 copies, Art DeBart cards, these came in packs as redemptions. That means, unfortunately, should you come across one in a pack, you’re going to be out of luck.
Given the history and success of the show, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that this is one of the most iconic entertainment trading cards of all-time. Today, copies typically sell for for thousands.
Additional Inserts
The 1993 SkyBox Simpsons checklist rounds out with a few other insert sets.
These start with ten Tattoos. Yes, these have characters from the show, but they’re done in an artistic style appropriate for an actual tattoo.
Nine Wiggle Tattoos land 1:4 packs. Channeling their inner Sportflics (for the ’80s baseball card collectors out there), give these a little tilt and they flip between two images.
Cel Cards (six cards, 1:18 packs) come on acetate. These can be stacked to create different images, similar to the traditional animation process.
Finally, there are four Glow-in-the Dark cards. These are quite tough to find today, falling 1:36 packs.
