2003 Stellar Sports Illustrated Swimsuit puts a trading card spin on one of the most famous magazine special to ever grace news stands. For the inaugural release, it goes beyond just photographs, incorporating premium elements like autographs and memorabilia as well. In doing so, it also lays the groundwork for what would follow for several years after.
2003 Stellar Sports Illustrated Checklist Overview
The base set has 100 cards. The first 98 are dedicated to photos taken during the shoots used in the magazine. Included are original images that didn’t appear in print. The bulk of the set highlights models through multi-card runs. Christie Brinkley, Marisa Miller and Daniela Pestova are among those featured. There’s also Molly Sims, who has gone on to acting in both movies and TV.
Rounding out the base set are a pair of checklists. Both have Petra Nemcova and the cover art from the 2003 SI Swimsuit Issue.
Autographs highlight the chase cards. Landing 1:48 packs, there are ten signers including Brinkley, Nemcova Cheryl Tiegs and Rachel Hunter. These autographs appear to be on standard base cards, though. As a result, collectors should exercise an added layer of caution.
Relics come in two forms. Six Memorabilia Cards (1:24 packs) have swatches of clothing worn by the models during their shoots. Body Sand cards are also 1:24 packs. These have sand taken off of the models’ bodies at the photo shoots.
Ten Classic inserts (1:4 packs) have photos selected by the models.
The five Swimsuit Issue covers from 1999 through 2003 are featured in the appropriately named Covers insert set (1:12 packs).
