1996 Topps Return of the Jedi Widevision trading cards wrap up the tallboy transfer of the Star Wars original trilogy. Following a similar format, it’s compliments the sets for A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back that released just a few months prior.
1996 Topps Return of the Jedi Widevision Checklist Details
Similar to the earlier Widevision sets, the base set is made up of 144 cards. The focus is on showing images as they were intended to on the big screen. That means bigger cards. Each measures 4 7/8″ by 3 3/4″, giving everything a widescreen look and feel. Nothing is cropped out so the card capture the epic scope of the originals.
All of the main images on the front come from remasters so everything is sharp. Factor in the glossy stock, and there’s a premium feel even in the base set.
Backs are extremely information, using all of the available space wisely. While there are recaps, backs also add additional images including storyboards and other production artwork, offering some insight into the artistry of how the movie was made.
Finest Chromium returns as the main insert set. Falling 1:12 packs (two per box), these take classic Ralph McQuarrie art and give it the chrome treatment. Like the base cards, backs have more notes and information.
Every 1996 Topps Return of the Jedi Widevision box includes a Mini Poster included as a box topper. These recreate various Return of the Jedi posters including some from other parts of the world.
A new addition to the checklist is a 3-D DIII card of Admiral Ackbar. A case hit, these were distributed through a special redemption.
