ABC’s TGIF block of Friday night family sitcoms kicked off in 1989, lasting for more than a decade. Shows like Mr. Belvedere, Step by Step and Dinosaurs are just some of the notable shows that were part of the lineup over the years. 1991 Impel Laffs covers, arguably, the three most iconic shows: Full House, Family Matters and Perfect Strangers. Yes, there are Steve Urkel, Balki and Uncle Jesse “rookie cards.”
The set is a straight forward one with just 80 total cards. Each show has 26 with a pair of checklists taking up the final two spots. Rather than mixing things up, each series takes up its own chunk of the set.
Despite its limited size, central characters and actors are showcased. There are also cards to spotlight key episodes. On the surface, there’s really not much to it. That said, there is some big nostalgia involved. Although all three shows live on to varying extents, they each had some of the most memorable TV characters at the time. Steve Urkel was a phenomenon, spawning all sorts of merchandise from dolls to breakfast cereal.Balki Bartokomous is still quoted. Full House got the reboot treatment on Netflix, bringing back everyone except for Michelle.
Although sets and boxes are still fairly reasonably priced, some of the character cards can command a premium on their own. For example, someone looking for something official connected to Steve Urkel may seek out his cards and not worry about the rest. Same with Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky from Full House.
