1987-88 Fleer Basketball might be one of the greatest releases ever when it comes to second-year cards. Rookies? Not so much. The follow-up to the landmark 1986-87 Fleer set isn’t nearly as great or as memorable, but that should probably be expected as not all rookie classes are strong and, by this point, things were getting back to normal as far as catching up went. And with that, 1987-88 Fleer Basketball ranks as one of the top sets ever for second-year stars.
1987-88 Fleer Basketball Checklist Details
The 1987-88 Fleer Basketball base set consists of 132 cards. This is the same as the previous year. With its limited size comes a strong concentration of stars.
The most valuable card in the product belongs to Michael Jordan. Going by traditional definitions, this is his second-year card and it towers over all of the rookies in the set. Other key second-year cards include Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Hakeem (Akeem) Olajuwon and Karl Malone.
Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are among the veteran superstars. The 1987-88 Fleer Basketball checklist also includes the final Julius Erving card to come from his playing career.
On the rookie card front, there are several good players, but not a lot when it comes to superstars—especially you compared to the previous year. Detlef Schrempf, Terry Porter and Ron Harper are among the highlights.
Each pack of 1987-88 Fleer Basketball includes one of 11 different Stickers. Like the main set, Michael Jordan is the clear top card.
While the checklist isn’t nearly as strong, one thing that this set has going for it is rarity compared to 1986-87. The debut set wasn’t a strong seller at the time. This meant lowered expectations from Fleer for the sophomore set and a smaller production run.
