1988-89 Fleer Basketball Checklist, Team Sets, Cards Info

The 1988-89 Fleer Basketball checklist is one of the best for all 1980s sports cards. It’s not at the levels of 1986-87, but that set is the benchmark. With several rookie cards of Hall of Famers, the expected assortment of big stars and one of the coolest early Michael Jordan cards in existence, what’s not to love?

1988-89 Fleer Basketball Checklist Details

For the third consecutive year, the base set clocks in at 132 cards. But that doesn’t mean the composition is the same. One small tweak at the end added not only a second card for major names, but resulted in one of the most iconic basketball cards of the decade.

Standard player cards make up the vast majority of the set, though. The big draws not named Michael Jordan are the rookie cards. Scottie Pippen, Reggie Miller, Dennis Rodman and John Stockton are the headliners. All also happen to have key roles in the Chicago Bulls dynasty that would begin within a couple of years. For Pippen and Rodman, they were part of that dynasty. Miller and Stockton were both rivals.

Even the second-tier rookies like Kenny Smith, John Salley and Mark Price are solid. The 1988-89 Fleer Basketball checklist also has the first cards that mention the expansion Charlotte Hornets with rookies of Muggsy Bogues and Del Curry.

As for veterans, Michael Jordan is the clear leader. Others include Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Karl Malone and Charles Barkley. 1988-89 Fleer Basketball is the final set to feature Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from his active career.

The big change for the 1988-89 Fleer Basketball checklist is the addition of a 12-card Fleer All-Star Team subset towards the end of the set. This gives a chance for the big names to appear once again. In particular, the Michael Jordan All-Star is a true standout simply due to its photo choice. MJ is shown mid-flight at the Slam Dunk competition, an image that is engrained in the memories of a generation of basketball fans. A high percentage likely had the poster hanging on their walls as well. It’s one of the most iconic sports photos of all-time.
