The first standalone Topps Finest Star Wars set came out in 1996. But they weren’t the brand’s first for the chromium card franchise. Those came a couple of years later. 1994 Topps Finest Star Wars Galaxy Magazine cards came with early issues of the publication.
A total of four cards make up the mini promo set. Each is done on chrome stock giving them a metallic look. Images use production art from Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston.
One card was included in each of the first four issues of Topps’ Star Wars Galaxy Magazine, a publication that looked largely at the growing number of licensed Star Wars products. Cards and other items came in poly bagged deluxe issues primarily sold at comic shops and sent to subscribers.
More Star Wars Finest cards arrived in 1995, this time as inserts in Star Wars Widevision and the ensuing releases for Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. These also used production art.
Star Wars Galaxy Magazine debuted in October, 1994, running for 13 issues through November, 1997. It then evolved into Star Wars Galaxy Collector for another couple of years.
