2006 Topps Lord of the Rings Masterpieces trading cards are a Middle Earth art show. Similar to Star Wars Galaxy and Marvel Masterpieces, the set is all about fine art. From the base set through the various inserts, artists get the chance to share their interpretations on Tolkien’s creations.
Besides a beautiful base set, sketch cards are the big chase.
2006 Topps Lord of the Rings Masterpieces Checklist Details
The 90-card base set is broken down into several sections. Leading off are a dozen Characters with John Alvin providing his spin on the main characters from Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy. Costume and video game designs, caricatures, and key moments are also part of the checklist. New Visions let artists go loose with original art done for the product.
Sketch cards are approximately two per hobby box with nearly 70 artists contributing. This is just the second set of Lord of the Rings trading cards to include the chase cards following Evolutions. Like usual for Topps products of the era, the quality varies greatly with some artists doing simple sketches and other doing full blown color and detailed renderings.
Just two other insert sets are on the 2006 Topps Lord of the Rings Masterpieces checklist. Taking a page from Star Wars Galaxy is a six-card Etched Foil Puzzle. Build the set, which is easy at 1:6 packs, and it’s a collage of characters by Kayanan. Redemptions for the original art were also included in packs.
Nine Foil Art cards have photorealistic drawings of nine key characters. What these lack in color, they make up for in detail. In addition to the main versions done with silver foil, there are Bronze, Gold and one-of-one Refractor parallels.
