1966 Topps Batman Red Bat A Series trading cards see the Caped Crusader continue to keep Gotham City safe from an increasingly strange mix of rogues. Although not a direct sequel to the earlier Black Bat release, this one carries on with a similar design and structure. That means more Norman Saunders art and new mini stories to be told.

1966 Topps Batman Red Bat A Series Checklist Overview

With just 44 cards, the Red Bat set is a little smaller than Black Bat’s 55. However, it’s a lot more strange. Whereas the Black Bat set unfolds like a handful of small, self-contained stories, 1966 Topps Batman Red Bat cards are virtually all on their own. Subsets do exist within the checklist but that’s more to do with the puzzle pieces on the back than any sort of running narrative. The Caped Crusader can go from stopping a spy at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington on one card to battling a giant spider in Africa on the next.

Although increasingly bizarre — which is saying a lot for a comic book with a rogue’s gallery that includes characters named The Joker, Catwoman and Penguin — the art work stays in line with the previous release. Norman Saunders, a Topps legend whose other credits include Mars Attacks and Civil War News, does the paintings once again. The style keeps in line with the Adam West TV show, albeit with a pulp style twist.

You’ll find some classic villains, but the majority of the 1965 Topps Batman Red Bat checklist features some oddities. Pirates, cowboys and wave-riding bank robbers are some of the nefarious foes the Caped Crusader and Robin encounter.

As part of the overall group of 1966 Topps Batman trading cards, A Series cards are popular. However, they don’t have quite the same prestige or values as their Black Bat counterparts. A big part of that is timing. Black Bat has some of the first appearances of Batman and other classic characters. This is a second series. Fun? Sure, but not quite the same.
