1987 Comic Images GI Joe might be the most overlooked set of trading cards the franchise has ever produced. It’s not the first set, it’s not filled with a lot of star power and it wasn’t stashed inside a purportedly sealed $3.5 million case of Pokemon cards. This is an extremely straightforward, no frills release that centers on the Marvel comic book series.
Consisting of just 55 cards, the checklist mainly highlights the various Joe and Cobra characters that hit the newsstands in monthly issues.
Fronts have a tightly cropped image taken from either Marvel comic panels or portions of covers. A simple white border, thick black inner frame and sunset orange nameplate are the only other design elements. Backs go with a file card approach offering a brief bio.
The set falls in line with other Comic Images sets from the time covering the sweeping Marvel Universe. In short, it’s simple and offers no major surprises.
Although not rare, this isn’t an overly common release, either. It’s out there in various forms but you might have to do some looking or be patient to get what you’re looking for at a price you’re willing to spend.
