1992 Impel X-Men Checklist, Trading Cards Details

Ad

1992 Impel X-Men trading cards take the formula established by the company’s first couple of Marvel Universe sets and goes all-mutant. Perhaps even more notable is the fact that all of the cards include original art from Jim Lee. By today’s standards, it’s a simple and straightforward release. But that doesn’t take away from its enduring popularity.

1992 Impel X-Men Checklist Overview

The base set is a somewhat modest 100 cards. It’s organized around different themes, although all are character-focused. Things start with 40 Super Heroes, followed by 30 Super-Villains. Teams, Ex X-Men and Allies take things up to #90. The next nine-cards go together to form a Danger Room puzzle that’s similar to a splash page.

Fronts are colorful and have lots going on. Still, it’s a showcase for Lee’s work. The era-defining artist did all 99 cards for the set, giving it a defining feature beyond its tighter X-only focus. Backs rank characters on a scale of 1-7 in several areas, making for an-easy-to-read chart. There’s also key info like their name, size and first appearance. Bios and trivia-laden “X-tra Facts” round things out.

The biggest chase in the product is Jim Lee’s autograph. He signed a small number of cards. Given the large print run run of the product, these are tough to find.

Keeping with their Marvel Universe sets, Impel included five Gold Holograms as well.

Boxes of the set use the “Uncanny X-Men” title. Wolverine and Magneto are both featured on them, although the content inside is the same.

A special factory tin set is also available. Limited to 7,500 numbered copies, it includes a card explaining the Power Ratings system that isn’t in packs.

Like most Marvel trading card sets from this period (and their comic counterparts), the print run for 1992 Impel X-Men is big. Decades later, unopened boxes are still readily available. That hasn’t stopped them from dramatically rising in price, though, as collectors look to recapture the era, chase high-grade singles and hunt for some of Deadpool’s earliest cards.
