1991 Premier Rap Pack joins Pro Set’s Yo! MTV Raps as a second set of mainstream trading cards released that year trace the emergence of mainstream hip hop. Although not quite as famous as Pro Set’s release, Premier Cards didn’t have the same distribution network and it didn’t carry the massive brand recognition. That doesn’t matter much today as collectors look more to the strength of the checklist and the early trading card appearances of several iconic groups and artists.
1991 Premier Rap Pack Checklist Details
1991 Premier Rap Pack keeps it simple with a 150-card base set. Although packs advertise it as Series 1, there was no follow-up release. A total of 69 acts are featured, meaning most have two cards.
N.W.A. is among the headliners. Not only is the influential group together on cards, but collectors will also find individual appearances from Eazy E and Ice Cube. Other key cards include Ice T, Salt-n-Pepa, Naughty by Nature, 2 Live Crew, and Kid ‘n Play.
And for those looking for something weird, like really weird, 1991 Premier Rap Pack acts as a reminder that Kid Rock got his start in hip hop, complete with wild hair.
In addition to ten base cards, packs come with one of 20 different Unstoppable Graffiti Art Stickers. These go beyond music and offer a showcase for urban art and its creators.
Although not as plentiful as Yo! MTV Raps, supply isn’t a major issue. With some of the key singles now commanding significant premiums, looking at complete sets could be a way to find potential deals.
