2001 Topps Planet of the Apes trading cards capture the reimagining from Tim Burton. While the film has its share of detractors, there’s a lot to this set including a stellar autograph lineup that includes a couple of Hollywood icons.
Available at both the hobby and retail levels, each has their own mix of cards and things to look for.
2001 Topps Planet of the Apes Checklist Details
The 90-card base set goes beyond simply recapping the movie. While the makes up the majority of the checklist, there are several character cards at the start of the set. The end offers a look on the other side of the camera with an interesting Behind-the-Scenes subset. With so much make-up effects and action, these are in many ways the most intriguing cards in the main set.
Autographs and Memorabilia Cards
Autographs and Movie Memorabilia cards are both exclusive to hobby packs, each landing approximately one per box. Although only eight signers can be found in packs, there are some major names. Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Roth are among the contemporary stars. There’s also a throwback to the original Planet of the Apes film with Linda Harrison.
However, the biggest names are a couple of legends. First up is Charlton Heston, one of Hollywood’s biggest stars in the 1960s, including a starring role to kick off the Planet of the Apes franchise. He’s not recognizable here, this time playing an ape, but it is Heston’s only certified autograph card. There’s also Kris Kristofferson, a major music and acting star in the 1970s.
Adding a little more intrigue to the autograph that isn’t officially but it most definitely exists. Collectors won’t find Estella Warren in packs. However, over the years copies of her card have surfaced including some given away by Topps at shows and events. Likely, she was late in getting the cards back so they weren’t available for pack out.
Mark Wahlberg does not have an autograph on the 2001 Topps Planet of the Apes checklist.
Memorabilia Cards use swatches from the material used to make seven costumes. The wording on the back of these is careful to state that they’re not from the actual screen-worn costumes. Rather, they’re part of the film’s production.
Additional Inserts
Retail packs have a couple of exclusive inserts of their own.
Simian Suede (1:8 retail packs) take a flocked texture approach. Stickers take it old-school, highlighting characters in a similar fashion to the basic Topps inserts in the 1970s and ’80s. Although the 1:12 retail pack odds may not seem like a challenge, these are actually quite tough to find and command strong prices given their basic nature.
Ten Embossed Foil (1:6 packs) are the only inserts available in both hobby and retail packs.
The Importance of Telling Hobby and Retail Boxes Apart
For those chasing autographs, it’s important to be able to spot hobby and retail packaging. Both packs and boxes make it easy. Simply look to the bottom to see what inserts they offer. If the pack of box mentions autographs, it’s hobby. If Simian Suede is noted, it’s retail.
