2023 Topps Star Wars High Tek brings back the acetate line. And while it might not have a large checklist character-wise, once you dig into all the different variations and parallels, it suddenly seems more daunting. Going back to Tek’s roots in 1990s sports cards, that’s the entire point.
Released initially at New York Comic Con 2023, it was later also made available to the general public on the Topps website. While not rare, it’s not as wide a release as a lot of other modern Topps Star Wars products.
2023 Topps Star Wars High Tek Checklist Details
At its most basic, the 2023 Topps Star Wars High Tek set has 50 cards. All are character-based and done on plastic-like acetate with foil design elements.
But here’s where things get a little more complicated.
Each card comes with three different patterns. Basically, all 50 cards have three different versions. Everything is the same except for the foil background. Pattern 1 resembles a giraffe print, Pattern 2 has waves running through it while Pattern 3 is a series of dots.
Without labels, how can you know the corresponding patterns are the right ones? Through deduction using the parallels. All three have a handful of color-based Diffractor versions that are serial numbered. However, there are a couple of differences. Pattern 1 is the only one with standard Diffractors numbered to 99 and Green Diffractors numbered to 75. Of the two remaining variations, Pattern 2 has Blue parallels but 3 doesn’t.
With the base set and its complicated rainbow taking up much of the checklist, there isn’t much in the way of other inserts.
Ten characters from The Mandalorian appear in a second set of cards. These have a circular background (along with different numbering). Blue Diffractors are the most common of these with 50 copies each.
Rounding things out are autographs. Base versions, which are numbered to 50, combine to land 1:23 packs. The number of signers is kept small with just eight. It’s a strong list that includes Rosario Dawson, Katee Sackhoff, Giancarlo Esposito and Carl Weathers.
Each 2023 Topps Star Wars High Tek hobby box has just one pack of six card. At minimum, two of those cards are numbered parallels.
