When Inkworks dropped their set of Twilight trading cards, it’s safe to say that most of the hobby wasn’t ready. The film was a cultural phenomenon and everything seemingly connected to it was gobbled up to its throngs of fans. In the process, it introduced an entirely new audience to trading cards. Of everything on the set’s checklist, it was the Twilight Pieceworks costume cards that become the hottest and most coveted cards.
Landing 1:36 hobby packs — less than one per box — each has a swatch from a costume worn in the film. Twelve cards are in the set, each from a different actor/character.
Both of the film’s central leads, Kristen Stewart (Bella) and Robert Pattinson (Edward), lead off the Pieceworks checklist. Others include Taylor Lautner (Jacob), Ashley Greene (Alice) and Kellan Lutz (Emmett).
Without any autographs, Pieceworks cards were the key chase in the product. In the grand scheme, they aren’t incredibly tough to pull but they aren’t in every box either. With 24 packs in a hobby box, collectors could expect to find two in three boxes. Given how quickly prices soared, these dried up quickly. Today, they land on the secondary market in a trickle. They’re definitely not common and it’s more of a seller’s market as there is much competition at any given time.
Although this set was reprinted twice, once by Topps for the UK and again by NECA after Inkworks went out of business, neither of those have any costume cards. Neither do any of the other sets for later films put out by NECA.
