2000 Topps Pokemon The Movie 2000 take the cartoon’s second theatrical film and give it the traditional trading card treatment. The checklist might not be big but it is one of the most creative attempts by Topps with their Pokemon trading cards license.
2000 Topps Pokemon The Movie 2000 Checklist Overview
Like all of Topps’ sets with the license, this is not a trading card game. Rather, this set takes Pokemon The Movie 2000 and creates a product similar to what they do with Star Wars, Batman Begins or Last Action Hero.
The 72-card base set takes the film’s story and visuals and retells it on a 2.5″ by 3.5″ canvas. There are actually two parts to the checklist. The first dozen cards cover Pikachu’s Rescue Adventure, the short that preceded the main feature. Following that, 59 cards delve into the main movie. An unnumbered checklist bookends things.
Each has a slightly different design on the front for the nameplate section. Pikachu’s Rescue Adventure cards have the caption written in the wake of a bouncing Pokeball. For feature cards, there’s a crystal that juts out across the bottom for the bit of writing. Stills are otherwise full-bleed with the Pokemon The Movie 2000 logo in the top corner. Backs have fairly detailed write-ups and a second image.
Base cards have two separate but similar parallels, both of which use foil. Foilboard cards are somewhat dark and metallic. Rainbow Foil cards, which appear to be harder to find, have a brighter holographic look to them, particularly when they put under bright light. There’s one foil card per pack.
Chase Cards
2000 Topps Pokemon The Movie 2000 has three addition insert sets.
First Appearance Holograms are the most valuable cards in the product. Landing approximately one per box (1:36 packs), six cards make up the set. These are full holograms with the Pokemon in the foreground and a Pokeball tiled design in the background. There’s a big price range on these. Raw, they can top a couple hundred dollars. They’re popular with professional grading as well as even mid-range copies can net significantly more.
Also landing one per box are Authentic Film Frame cards. These bring a sort of memorabilia twist to Pokemon trading cards. Embedded in each of these is an actual film cel from a theatrical print of the film. So while there’s technically only one card in the set, there are thousands of possibilities for the frames inside them.
Rounding out the checklist are ten Animation Stick-Ons. These have a pair of plastic stickers on the front and a sene on the back. The idea is that you use the backing to make different combinations.
Like virtually every set of early Pokemon trading cards — game or otherwise — prices have gone up significantly. Unopened boxes (some still exist) sell for thousands. Holograms typically start at a couple hundred dollars and go up from there based on the character, condition or professional grade. This despite being one per box.
