1998 Inkworks TV’s Coolest Classics trading cards are nostalgia at its most nostalgic. The anthology series covers several iconic programs including The Andy Griffith Show, Get Smart, The Brady Bunch, The Beverly Hillbillies and Hogan’s Heroes.
That’s a lot of ground to cover for a 90-card base set. Obviously, it’s not comprehensive. Rather it looks for themes that carry throughout all of the shows like quotes, fashions, the kids life, dating, premiere episodes and even the dating game.
Autographs were not an easy pull, landing 1:180 packs (1:5 boxes). The seven-card checklist doesn’t have any lead stars, but the faces should all be familiar to those who grew up in the 1960s and ’70s. Signers include Barbara Feldon, Barry Williams and Donna Douglas.
Three additional insert sets keep with the nostalgia theme. Greatest Moments uses an old TV as its main design piece. Smell-O-Rama has a scratch ‘n sniff element that is either delicious or disgusting depending on your tastes (or both). Finally, there’s Dream Girl, which uses a sparkle foil to highlight some of the crush-worthy characters from the shows.
When 1998 Inkworks TV’s Coolest Classics first came out, it looked like the intention was to carry the line forward in some fashion. However, that never materialized. It might have been due to disappointing sales, the complexities of licensing multiple shows in one set or a combination of the two.
