1993 Team Blockbuster Video Games trading cards take things back to the glory days of 16-bit button mashing. On the surface it’s a promo set that’s steeped in nostalgia in a couple of different forms. It’s also set that has some oddball offerings for other popular lines and licenses.

You didn’t get 1993 Team Blockbuster Video Games cards in packs. They weren’t prizes found at the bottom of a cereal box. All you had to do was head to Blockbuster Video, resist the urge to rent A Few Good Men or Beethoven and take a Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis game home instead.
The 1993 Team Blockbuster Video Games checklist has 50 cards. Each is for a different game from the era. Box art is on the front while backs offer up a brief description as well as a couple of tips and pointers. This was before the internet so some of these pointers were gold for young gamers.
A lot’s going on with this set. On the surface, there’s the direct tie to Blockbuster Video. The once mighty rental chain was a major part of life for millions at a time before streaming put millions of movies and shows just a click away.
Of course, there are the games themselves. Some live on. Others, not so much. Sonic the Hedgehog, California Games and Ecco the Dolphin are just a few of the gaming franchises represented.
Even more fun is found with cards featuring franchises that are big outside the video game realm. The 1993 Team Blockbuster Video Games checklist includes licensed trading cards for Star Wars, Spider-Man, WWF, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Home Alone, The Terminator, Batman, The Little Mermaid, and more. Its oddball nature means that these can be overlooked.
Cards were delivered to stores in wrapped randomly assorted bricks of 100. These can still be found today.
