1992 O-Pee-Chee Batman Returns trading cards sends the Caped Crusader to the Great White North. True to form for most of the Canadian card maker’s sets, the set is almost identical to its Topps counterpart. That said, there are a couple of notable differences in its production and presentation.
1992 O-Pee-Chee Batman Returns Checklist Details
The 89-card base set recaps the Tim Burton blockbuster from start to finish. That means lots of Michael Keaton’s Batman, Danny DeVito as the Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, all iconic in the place in the franchise’s history.
The set is actually one card bigger than the Topps set. The additional card isn’t that exciting, though. It’s a checklist card that’s tacked onto the end.
As far as layout and design goes, the O-Pee-Chee and Topps Batman Return sets are the same. Fronts have an orange and yellow gradient border, Gotham skyline to hold the caption and an image from the movie. Backs bring back the skyline to split things up, offering the movie’s logo and a write up.
Unlike a lot of O-Pee-Chee sets, text is entirely in English and not bilingual. For most sports sets, O-Pee-Chee could be counted on for brighter card stock to help differentiate from Topps cards as well. While still bright, Topps also went in that direction. So the easiest way to spot an OPC card is with the copyright info at the bottom, which notes “O-Pee-Chee Co. Ltd.”
Every pack of 1992 O-Pee-Chee Batman Returns includes a Stadium Club insert. These go against what the brand stood for at the time, which was premium, glossy stock and full-bleed photos. Not only did Topps have the proper glossy inserts, but they did a separate Stadium Club Batman Returns release as well. Here, cards have black borders and they’re done on regular stock. So similar in content but very different in how they look and feel.
Today, 1992 O-Pee-Chee Batman Returns is still fairly easy to find. It was printed in large quantities compared to a lot of other releases from the company. As a result, it’s still very affordable.
