1994 Fleer Marvel Masterpieces is a third installment of the premium line that takes superheroes and villains to the realm of fantasy art. This time around, brothers Greg and Tim Hildebrandt take the spotlight. The fantasy masters did every card in the product including inserts. The result is something that remains iconic decades later and stands out as some of the best the Marvel Masterpieces line ever produced.
1994 Fleer Marvel Masterpieces Checklist Overview
The base set has 140 cards. The approach is simple with all but the checklist at the end focusing on a different character. But that’s where the simplicity ends. The Hildebrandt’s bring their distinct style, delivering detailed and dynamic art throughout. Fronts are full-bleed, allowing as much of the paintings as possible to be shown. The character’s name and Masterpieces logo are both done in gold foil, adding a subtle sense of sophistication.
Backs start with a tighter cropping of the same artwork. In addition to a brief character bio, the Hildebrandts offer their thoughts and commentary as well.
This marks the first time the Masterpieces line included parallels. Landing one per pack, all 140 base cards have Gold Foil Signature versions. These have facsimile signatures from the Hildebrandts.
A couple of other insert sets are available in packs.
PowerBlast cards used etched foil for a flashier sort of pop. The set has nine cards with one landing every six hobby packs and one per Walmart pack.
Ten Holofoil cards are all available with three different versions depending on what packs they come from. Silver borders are 1:3 hobby packs. Gold are only in jumbo packs (1:4). Finally, there are Bronze Holofoil cards in Walmart packs (1:4).
Rounding out the 1994 Fleer Marvel Masterpieces checklist are ten oversized Masterprints. One set came with each case. These measure 6 1/2″ by 10″.
