1996 Fleer/SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces marks the fifth and final entry for the premium art trading card line’s original run. The set also happens to be a modern classic where quality, rarity and brand all collide to make for one incredibly valuable product. Looking at the product as a whole and its odds, there’s nothing too tough to stop collectors from building a master set. But because there wasn’t a whole lot out there to begin with, prices have become the biggest challenge.

For this set, the artistic reigns are handed to fantasy masters Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell. The team created the artwork for the entire set, including its inserts.
Things start with a 100-card base set that’s divided into three sections. The first 54 cards are all about different Marvel characters. Thirty Duels and Legacies cards delve into ten iconic rivalries and the futures they helped inspire. Finally, there’s Genesis that looks at the same character as they evolved into three different forms over the decades.
1996 Fleer/SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces has just two standard insert sets.
Double Impact are dual-sided cards with a character painted by Boris on one side and Julie on the other. Six cards are in the set, which carries 1:4 pack odds. With 18 packs per box, collectors could expect at least four and possibly five.
Six Gallery cards bring more of a design splash thanks to the intricate gold foil borders that surround the cards. These are meant to mimic a picture frame.
Although long expired, there are redemptions good for original artwork. Extremely tough, these are 1:60,000 packs. That’s about one in every 3,333 boxes.
1996 Fleer/SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces arrived at a time when the hobby was changing and doing so quickly. As beloved and coveted as all Marvel Masterpieces sets are today, when this one released the brand was tired. Combine that with the fact that the trading card base was eroding quickly and the higher price tag, orders were slim. That meant a much smaller production, leading to the strong prices we have today, even for standard base cards.
