2012 Upper Deck Marvel Beginnings II picks up where the initial release left off. The second set of a three-part run, it delves into the origins of characters throughout the Marvel Comics universe. A mix of classic and modern art are once again at the forefront along with a sizeable checklist that includes several interesting insert sets.
2012 Upper Deck Marvel Beginnings II Checklist Details
The base set adds another 180 cards. Numbering picks up from the first set, starting at #181 and running through #360. The final set adds another 180 more. Fronts use a pop art design with both a then-current interpretation of the character along with an inset image from their early Marvel days.
Backs get into backstories with short bios as well as information on their first appearances. It’s not just the issue but the creators involved as well.
The lone parallels for the base set are one-of-one Printing Plates. Each card has four different versions reflecting the print process: Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow.
Inserts
Inserts are a mix of premium chases and standard stuff. Most either carry on, expand or put a slightly different twist on already established insert sets.
Every pack has a Breakthrough Issues card. A direct continuation from the first series, these showcase major Marvel moments using comic covers. These are also the basis for the product’s autographs. Landing 1:72 packs, these are signed by one, two, three or four different creators. Stan Lee, Chris Claremont, Marv Wolfman and Brian Michael Bendis are among the set’s signers.
Ultimate Panel Focus Cuts use panels cut from the issues they originally appeared in. Upper Deck used books that weren’t in optimal condition to create these, offering up pieces of landmark books cut to fit the trading card format. They’re basically this corner of the hobby’s version of a memorabilia card.
Of course, there are Sketch Cards on the checklist as well, falling 1:72 packs (approximately every third box). Each of these has original art from one of nearly 100 different artists.
Marvel Prime Micromotion (1:2 packs) returns with 60 new cards. While the the approach with intricate etched foil remains, the overall design is different.
The final two insert sets are different thematic spins on first series cards. First, there are Avengers Die-Cuts (1:2 packs). Marvel Beginnings has X-Men and Marvel Beginnings III centers on villains for its die-cuts.
Holograms also rotate, going from villains to X-Men. Landing 1:72 packs and boasting a large checklist of 42 cards, these are not easy to track down today.
