1985 General Mills Goonies are like One-Eyed Willy’s gold when it comes to trading cards. While many fans of the film know of the larger Topps set, General Mills may require a treasure hunt to complete.
It’s all in the distribution. For starters, cards came in select boxes of cereal. Rather than a pack of two or three cards, you got just one. The real twist, though? 1985 General Mills Goonies trading cards were exclusive to Canada and have since become virtually impossible to find in any quantity. So even with a modest checklist of ten cards, 1985 General Mills Goonies is a tough build.
The design is simple enough with one or two stills from the film on the front surrounded by a white border. The movie’s logo, card number and General Mills logo are the only other additions.
Backs have more to them. The top has a caption that gives each card a title. There’s a full-color headshot on a different character on every card. These characters offer up a Canadian-centric trivia question that’s intended to be a clue. Chunk also offers up the purpose of this on card #6 — the first letter in each answer can be used to spell a location. That answer offered up potential prizes like a trip to the Caribbean or, even better to many kids, a truck full of toys courtesy of Consumers Distributing. Collectors from the Great White North might get some “Cross Country Canada” vibes from these clues.
Given the immense popularity of Goonies collectibles now and the rarity of these cards, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they carry strong values today. Often only one or two cards show up at a time so building a full set is extremely challenging.
