When Shrek, Donkey, Pinocchio and the rest of the fractured fairy tale gang returned to the big screen for a third time, they returned to the hobby with their third card maker. 2007 Inkworks Shrek the Third trading cards are simple and, understandably, mainly aimed at kids. And while some A-list autographs would have been nice, collectors have to settle for some nice sketch cards instead.
The first half of the 72-card base set centers on characters, locations and other lore from the series. The synopsis doesn’t come until the back end of the set.
Sketch cards are the key inserts. Inserted one per hobby box, they all have original art done directly on the card. Cat Staggs, Cynthia Cummens and Renae De Liz are among the dozen artists who contributed to the release. Backs of pack-inserted cards are serial numbered. When Inkworks went bankrupt, more sketch cards ended up on the secondary market. These aren’t numbered.
Sketch cards are not available in retail packs.
Scratch and Stink are among the other insert cards. Similar to old stickers, these give off an odor when they’re activated. Each of the six cards has a variation depending on the type of pack they came from. Those in hobby packs have gold backgrounds. Retail packs use green backgrounds.
Fiona’s Fairytale 5 uses a little sparkle to showcase the film’s princess super squad.
Exclusive to retail packs are six tattoos.
Rounding out the 2007 Inkworks Shrek the Third trading cards are three box loaders and a case topper.
The first Shrek set was released by Dart Flipcards in 2001. Comic Images picked up the license for Shrek 2. However both sets have largely been forgotten.
