Much like the show, 2002 Inkworks Smallville Season 1 was a quiet success. It’s strong and does the job but it doesn’t feel like a smash success. Part of that might have to do with Tom Welling’s apparent reluctance to sign autographs. But one card should not define a set or product line.
Inkworks’ first Smallville set has a 90-card base set. Although it covers all of the initial episodes, the synopsis part doesn’t come until the backside of the set. Ahead of them on the checklist are character cards and a couple of other themed subsets.
Autographs are inserted 1:59 packs. While not every box has one, it’s better than a 50-50 chance. John Schneider (Jonathan Kent) and Allison Mack (Chloe) are the top signers. Schneider has crossover appeal thanks to his role as Beau Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard. That said, his signature isn’t that uncommon, which includes autographs on a few trading cards.
Four Pieceworks cards are also inserted 1:59 packs. This come with costume swatches used in the show.
2002 Inkworks Smallville Season 1 has a couple of pack-inserted base inserts. Smallville High is a nine-card foil puzzle. Spring Formal has six etched foil cards showing main cast at the school dance.
Boxes have one of three box loaders and cases come with their own exclusive card.
