1984 Topps Supergirl trading cards are an exercise in efficiency. On the one hand, they act as your typical set, looking at the movie. At the same time, they double as stickers on the other side. The approach is a little different from most of the company’s other 1980s sets, but the result is actually kind of fun today if you embrace the fact that the movie’s not great and there are tons of these cards out there.
1984 Topps Supergirl Checklist Details
Just 33 cards are in the set. That’s it. No variations, no inserts. Needless to say, it’s not a hard one to put together. Fronts are actually the sticker portion. They range from simple character shots with no captions to scenes given captions that resemble motivational posters to men chained to a bed with the title “Prisoner of Love.” Simply put, it’s not just simple movie stills and descriptive captions.
Needless to say, it’s all a little odd and not really like anything Topps did at the time. And maybe that’s okay. Given the lack of size and formatting change, it’s very possible they were trying something different.
Backs come in two types. The first 33 cards use a comic-style format to highlight movie moments. Some have captions that set the scene. Characters are also given speech bubbles. The final 11 cards get more traditional with puzzle pieces.
1984 Topps Supergirl trading cards are still very affordable today. But that shouldn’t be surprising. The film wasn’t a hit and it hasn’t really caught on with a cult following in the decades since. And then there’s the sheer quantity of it out there. Besides the usual wax packs, Topps also did bulk vending cases for the set, each with 4,500 cards. That’s 136 sets per case with perfect collation. In short, supply is likely to ever be an issue even as ’80s properties grow in popularity.
