It’s from a different era as the first set of Marvel trading cards, but 1984 FTCC Marvel Superheroes First Covers still represents one of the earlier sets to cover the comic juggernaut. Even if it doesn’t use much in the way of original material, that’s still significant.
This is a release that finds itself in two hobby realms, looking for a connection. When it comes to comics, #1s are a major sales driver. They’re comparable to rookies in the trading card realm.
1984 FTCC Marvel Superheroes First Issue Covers Checklist Details
Consisting of 60 cards, the set lives up to its name. Rather than original art or even interiors, the checklist is dedicated to debut comics. Fronts have images of #1 issues along with a simple white border. Backs offer up some highlights and key story points. While there are plenty of iconic issues, there are several cards that highlight some slightly lesser-known titles as well.
There’s not a lot of flair to this set. It’s not even particularly in depth. But it came out during a period when comic-inspired trading cards were still a novelty and not part of the hobby mainstream.
1984 FTCC Marvel Superheroes First Issue Covers isn’t as widely available as many of the comic card sets that would follow a few years later but it’s not as tough to find as you might expect.
Besides traditional packs and boxes, the set was also available as a boxed factory set. With unopened sets still floating around, this has also helped keep many cards in top condition.
A companion set to this one was released in 1991 by Comic Images.
