2008 Stellar Sports Illustrated Swimsuit follows through with what the set title’s promise. An extension of the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, the checklist highlights the many models, fashion and exotic locations. For the most part, it follows the pattern of previous releases but there are a couple of tweaks.
2008 Stellar Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Checklist Overview
The main base set follow a similar path as previous releases. A dozen models are featured. All of their cards are included consecutively making for easy runs for those who are looking for specific people versus the full set. Towards the end of the set are a pair of 2009 Preview cards with Bar Refaeli and Daniella Sarahyba. Customary for the set, the base set concludes with a card of the year’s cover shot. This time it’s Marisa Miller.
With just 75 cards, the base set is actually smaller the ones that came before it. Base sets from 2003 through 2007 have 100 cards.
Printing Plates, which are available for both the base set and select inserts, are 1:75 packs. Although numbered to 400, each individual plate is one-of-a-kind. A total of 100 different cards have plates, each with Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow versions.
Autographs, Memorabilia Cards and Other Inserts
Each 2008 Stellar Sports Illustrated Swimsuit box should have at least one autograph and one memorabilia card with a swatch of a photo shoot-worn bathing suit or bikini. However, with both being 1:16 packs, there’s a good change of getting a third hit in a box.
New to the product is an extremely scarce Jewel memorabilia card. Landing 1:6 cases, it has a jewel from a bathing suit worn by Tori Praver. It has a print run of just 20 copies.
Packs have two additional insert sets.
For the fourth consecutive year, one of the insert sets focuses on a celebrity appearance. Danica Patrick follows a similar path as Amanda Beard in 2005, Maria Sharapova in 2006 and Beyonce in the 2007 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit set. The NASCAR driver has a standalone ten-card set with one landing every four packs. All ten also have Printing Plates parallels.
Rookies return, showcasing models making their debut in 2008 as well as some icons from the past shown in their earliest shoots.
Five Editor’s Choice cards round out the checklist. Not in packs, these were distributed as box and case toppers.
