2009 Stellar Sports Illustrated Swimsuit is the final regular set charting the annual magazine. While it has many similar elements as past releases, one big piece is missing that was in place since the line’s debut in 2003 — autographs. There’s still ample content on the checklist with additional memorabilia cards picking up some of the premium slack.
2009 Stellar Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Checklist Details
The base set consists of 80 cards. That’s slightly bigger than 2008’s 75 but still noticeably smaller than 100 found in every other year. A similar structure remains with swimsuit models being featured with multi-card runs. Different photos are used on card fronts and backs with many previously unpublished images. The photographer and location of the shoot are on the back.
Printing Plates are available for the entire base set. Each of these is a one-of-a-kind metal card that was used in the set’s production. Every card has a black, cyan, magenta a yellow plate. All plates, which are also available for the product’s two regular insert sets, combine to land 1:58 packs. With just 16 packs per 2009 Stellar Sports Illustrated Swimsuit hobby box, that works out to a little better than every fourth box.
Memorabilia Cards and Inserts
Without autographs, memorabilia cards are the central chase element. Typically one per box in years past, this time they’re two. A total of 20 cards from 19 different models are on the checklist, each with a swatch from a photoshoot-worn swimsuit. Heidi Klum, Bar Refaeli and Marisa Miller are among the bigger names with relics. A couple of professional athletes are also in the set, tennis superstar Maria Sharapova and NASCAR driver Danica Patrick who has two different memorabilia cards.
Elle MacPherson is featured on a memorabilia card as well. However, it’s not in packs. Instead, it was a bonus case topper.
Memorabilia cards also get the Printing Plate treatment. These have the plate on one side of the card and the swatch on the other.
Two additional insert sets fill out the 2009 Stellar Sports Illustrated Swimsuit checklist.
One is dedicated to Patrick. Like 2008, the racer is featured on ten additional cards with one landing every fourth pack.
Body Paint is the other insert set. The models in this set, which include Klum and Brooklyn Decker, aren’t wearing traditional bathing suits. Instead the photos showcase the art of painted suits. This isn’t the first time body paint has been a feature in an SI Swimsuit set. The debut 2003 does, too. However, they’re more memorabilia in their approach with bits of actual body paint instead of being just a photo theme.
2009 Stellar Sports Illustrated Swimsuit has a print run of 120 cases, each with 16 boxes. While this is the final annual set, The Decade of Supermodels set followed in 2012.
