1993 Topps Sonic the Hedgehog marks the first time the iconic video game series appears in a mainstream set of trading cards. And while the set up wouldn’t normally stand out beyond the debut status, its rarity has helped elevate the product over the years in both value and desirability.
1993 Topps Sonic the Hedgehog Checklist Details
The base set has just 33 cards. Sounds easy to put together, but it’s not. Finding groups of cards are scarce and singles typically cost a lot more than the usual “commons.” As far as the approach goes, each is rooted in game screens from various game levels. They don’t even try to get rid of partial text from the top corner of the screen that tells players their score, how many rings they have or how much time is left. Rather than having a video game Sonic, he’s replaced by a cartoon illustration. Tails and Dr. Robotnik also appear.
Backs are split into two sections. The first has game tips and pointers. The bottom has a Rogue’s Gallery, spotlighting different enemies and creatures Sonic encounters.
Stickers are just as common as base cards, landing four per pack. These have larger illustrations on the front, some with cheesy slogans. Backs have game facts as well as a “Flick It” image of Sonic that, when complete, doubles as a flip book that shows an animation of him running.
1993 Topps Sonic the Hedgehog has one chase set. Prisms, which have a patterned foil background, land 1:18 packs. The insert set has only six cards but, again, the overall rarity of the product makes them tough and expensive.
