2023 Nintendo Super Mario Bros. Wonder trading cards arrived as an incentive for buying the Switch game at Walmart. Highlighting characters both familiar and new, it’s not a big set by any means. Still, a major chase element did cause something of a frenzy among collectors and Super Mario fans.
The main set has 15 cards and includes Mario, Luigi, Peach and a collection of other (mostly) friendly faces. They’re designed simply in the shape of playing cards, complete with rounded corners. They’re also colorful like the game they’re based on.
Backs have the same image as the front along with a short bio. Cards do not have numbers.
Four Holofoil cards are also on the Super Mario Bros. Wonder checklist. These are more difficult to pull and have an added finish on the front that gives them a shiny upgrade.
However, the big draw of the set is the elusive Elephant Mario card. It has just 1,000 copies, each of which is serial numbered. Needless to say, this card quickly became highly coveted with some of the early copies selling on eBay for several hundred dollars.
According to Nintendo, less than three percent of packs has one of these, which would suggest a print run somewhere in the 35,000-pack range.
Each of the Walmart-exclusive packs has ten cards.
