1997 Fleer/SkyBox X-Men .99 trading cards is a product aimed at those not looking to spend a lot of money. The name comes from the budget-friendly price tag of $0.99 per pack, which was a change of pack from the growing number of premium products that were coming out around the same time.
1997 Fleer/SkyBox X-Men .99 Checklist Details
With just 50 cards, it’s not just the price tag that’s small. Dedicated entirely to the X-Men franchise, even then it doesn’t go as deep as some other mutant-centric products like Fleer Ultra and Onslaught. Still, there’s a greatest hits approach to the most notable characters. Although not explicitly based on the Saturday morning cartoon that was a hit at the time, the checklist definitely focuses on characters found on the show.
Nearly the first half is dedicated to various X-Men heroes. They’re followed by and Evil Mutants subset. Rounding things out are Combat cards that showcase various mutant match-ups and Team-Ups that highlight partnerships.
Character-specific cards have very short write-ups along with rankings of their various skills. Combat and Team-Ups provide a bit more context, but not much.
Tattoos are available in packs as well. A total of 16 are in the set with one landing every third pack.
Each pack has five trading cards. As a bonus, there is also three Marvel Overpower cards from the trading card game that was out at the time.
The emphasis on 1997 Fleer/SkyBox X-Men .99 was always on affordability. It was meant to get into the hands of collectors. Understandably, the quality isn’t on the same level as most other mid ’90s Marvel sets. Without much in the way of chase elements, that remains true for the most part today as well.
