No matter how you look at it 3-D is a gimmick. And like any gimmick, sometimes it works and sometimes it just sucks you in. For 2007 Artbox World of Harry Potter 3-D trading cards, it works. The anthology-style set offers a new card take on the first four films in the franchise. And standing behind its gimmick, every card in the product except for autographs is done in 3-D.
The 72-card base set makes good use of advances in 3-D printing technology to offer a set with plenty of depth — literally. Unlike sets using the style even a decade earlier, the images show plenty of perspective. And they’re clear. There’s no need for glasses as it’s totally different than the blue and red style of 3-D that Inkworks used as recent as 2001 for their Jurassic Park III release.
2007 Artbox World of Harry Potter 3-D Autographs and Other Inserts
Even with the change in style, 2007 Artbox World of Harry Potter 3-D maintains the same basic insert structure as earlier sets for the franchise. That means a big focus on autographs, costume and prop cards.
Signed cards land every other box. Although a redemption, Daniel Radcliffe leads the 12-card checklist. Among the dozen cards are three dual autographs, one of which has a Robert Pattinson autograph.
Costume (1:24 packs) and Prop (1:80) stick with the 3-D style. These all use wardrobe and set pieces used in the production of the four featured films.
In addition to the premium inserts are three additional chase sets, which are also in 3-D. A nine-card puzzle forms a collage of Harry, Hermione and Ron, showcasing how they aged over the course of the first half of the franchise. There are also Rare and Ultra Rate inserts that highlight characters with a framed design.
Artbox would produce a follow-up set of 3-D Harry Potter trading cards in 2008.
