The late 1980s and early ’90s were interesting times where R-rated properties like Robocop and Rambo were overhauled into kid-friendly cartoons. Even B-movies could make the potentially lucrative leap. Such is the case with The Toxic Avenger, a film most would agree isn’t the most appropriate for young eyes. But a Toxie-led cartoon? That’s different. 1991 Topps Toxic Crusaders trading cards are a showcase for the short-lived show.
On the surface, this is a somewhat straightforward release with a base set and a one-per-pack insert. But when you’re dealing with a cast of characters that not only includes the likes of Toxie but others with names like Dr. Killemoff, Major Disaster and Headbanger, these cards are weird.
1991 Topps Toxic Crusaders Checklist Overview
The base set consists of 88 colorful cards. Following a title card, the top of the checklist introduces the show’s characters. Besides Toxie, collectors meet the likes of Nozone, Bonehead and more. Following that are cards that take shots and moments from the show.
The design’s color palette draws from the early ’90s with lots of bright colors on the front and back. Besides the standard write-up and plot points, cards also include environmental tips. Because spinning a B-movie franchise into an environmentally conscious cartoon makes perfect sense.
Each pack comes with a sticker as well. But instead of the customary kiss-cut ones they’d been using for seeming ever in entertainment products, here’s they’re hologram stickers. They’re not just basic holograms, either. They get the full 3-D treatment.
Not surprisingly, 1991 Topps Toxic Crusaders trading cards fly somewhat under the radar today. As a result, prices are still reasonable. That said, there’s not a ton of it out there, particularly considering the period the set’s from.
