1991 Topps Addams Family trading cards take a look at the film that helped introduce the franchise to a new generation. It’s not all that different from the card maker’s other entertainment releases leading up to this point, but there are some signs that they were looking to evolve some elements.
As far as structure goes, this is a very typical Topps entertainment release. The 99-card base set leads off with some character profiles before shifting into a recap of the film. With such strong visuals in virtually every scene, it’s a natural fit for the medium.
Fronts are inspired by antique photo albums. They have purple outer borders with ornate designs holding the image in. One of the noticeable differences here is the stock. Instead of traditional cardboard feeling stock, cards are glossy. Around this time Topps had been using this stock for entertainment releases but only in special factory sets. With 1991 Topps Addams Family, it’s what’s in the packs.
This switch also impacts the backs, which have bright white stock. The layout has the film’s logo at the top and the Addams’ house at the bottom, all in color. The middle has lots of space for a write-up.
Stickers
The base set is joined by 11 Stickers, which land one per pack. These are done to resemble framed photos on the front and have a puzzle on the back.
Packs are another production change. Rather than the usual wax packs, Topps opted for cello packs. Not a huge thing in the grand scheme of things, but like the glossy stock, it’s a sign that they were exploring the collector market. Another change — no gum.
1991 Topps Addams Family Values Today
1991 Topps Addams Family trading cards are still affordable today. A big part of that comes from availability. In 1991, virtually everything got generous print runs. So much so, boxes and sets are still relatively easy to find. Although not worth a lot, the visuals are fun and there’s plenty of star power including Christopher Lloyd and the first trading cards of Christina Ricci.
